Departing Baidi at Dawn · Li Bai
Li Bai · The Immortal Poet · Tang · Li Bai
“朝辭白帝彩雲間,千里江陵一日還。兩岸猿聲啼不住,輕舟已過萬重山。” “At dawn I left Baidi amid the coloured clouds; a thousand li to Jiangling, back within a day. The apes on both banks cry without end — my light boat has passed ten thousand mountains.” Written in 759 when Li Bai, on his way into exile, was pardoned at Baidi and raced home down the Yangtze. All 28 characters are set vertically, each collected from public-domain Tang rubbings: 24 are in Yan Zhenqing’s hand, from his Duobao Pagoda, Yan Family Temple, Yan Qinli and Zang Huaike steles; 彩, 岸, 猿 and 啼 survive intact in no Yan rubbing, so 彩, 岸 and 猿 come from Liu Gongquan’s Xuanmi Pagoda Stele (Tang, small-script version) and 啼 from the Tang epitaph of Wang Qianchang (867). Borrowed characters are matched to Yan’s stroke weight, size and ink tone. River waves and distant hills in ink wash.
