Seeing Off Zhao Zong at Night · Yang Jiong
Yang Jiong · Tang · Yang Jiong
“趙氏連城璧,由來天下傳。送君還舊府,明月滿前川。” “The Zhao clan’s jade disc, worth whole cities, has been famed throughout the realm since of old. I see you off, returning to your old home; the bright moon fills the river before you.” A celebrated farewell poem by Yang Jiong, one of the Four Paragons of the Early Tang, likening his friend Zhao Zong to the legendary He jade returned intact to Zhao. All 20 characters of the poem are set vertically, each collected from public-domain Tang rubbings, and all 20 are in Yan Zhenqing’s hand, from his Duobao Pagoda, Yan Family Temple, Zang Huaike and Yuan Zi steles (Ming rubbing, National Palace Museum, Taipei). 璧 (jade disc) is written with the loan character 辟, as on Tang steles (form from the Yan Family Temple Stele), and 明 appears in Yan’s variant form 朙. The poem is in the Complete Tang Poems, juan 50. Bright moon in ink wash.
