Birdsong in the Ravine · Wang Wei (Running Script)
Wang Wei · Tang · Wang Wei
“人閒桂花落,夜靜春山空。月出驚山鳥,時鳴春澗中。” “Man at rest, osmanthus blossoms fall; the night is still, the spring mountain empty. The moon comes out and startles the mountain birds; now and then they call in the spring ravine.” Wang Wei’s most celebrated Chan-tinged quatrain. This is the running-script edition; a Yan Zhenqing regular-script edition is also available. All 20 characters are set vertically, each collected from a Tang-dynasty running-script original or rubbing (no fonts), mainly in the Wang Xizhi tradition: 人 閒 桂 花 夜 春 山 空 月 出 驚 時 中 from Huairen’s Preface to the Sacred Teachings, collected from Wang Xizhi (carved 672; ink rubbing, National Palace Museum, Taipei); 静 from Feng Chengsu’s Shenlong copy of the Orchid Pavilion Preface (a Tang-dynasty tracing copy, Palace Museum, Beijing); 落 鳥 鳴 from Lu Jianzhi’s handwritten Rhapsody on Literature (National Palace Museum, Taipei); 澗 from Emperor Taizong’s Jinci Inscription (rubbing, National Diet Library, Japan). 靜 appears in the Orchid Pavilion form 静. Moon on ink-wash paper.
