Deer Park · Wang Wei (Running Script)
Wang Wei · Tang · Wang Wei
“空山不見人,但聞人語響。返景入深林,復照青苔上。” “On the empty mountain no one is seen, yet voices echo. The returning light enters the deep wood and shines again on the green moss.” From Wang Wei’s Wangchuan Collection, a famous study of stillness through sound and light. All 20 characters are set vertically, each collected from a Tang-dynasty running-script original or rubbing (no fonts), mainly in the Wang Xizhi tradition: 空 山 不 見 人 聞 深 林 復 照 上 from Huairen’s Preface to the Sacred Teachings, collected from Wang Xizhi (carved 672; ink rubbing, National Palace Museum, Taipei); 響 景 青 from Lu Jianzhi’s handwritten Rhapsody on Literature (National Palace Museum, Taipei); 但 語 返 入 from Li Yong’s Lushan Temple Stele (ink rubbing, National Palace Museum, Taipei); 苔 from Emperor Taizong’s Jinci Inscription (rubbing, National Diet Library, Japan). 返 is written 反, as on the Lushan Temple Stele; early editions of the poem also read 反景. Moon on ink-wash paper.
